    Georgia-Pacific Success Story: Beefing up Design

    How Georgia-Pacific Innovated to Enhance Productivity


    Challenge:

    Leading fast-food chains rely on a family-owned producer of gourmet hamburgers to provide over 6 million pounds of product per week. To accomplish this, the company employed an automated process, using robotics to package its plastic-wrapped beef patties into boxes.


    The process was effective, but with such a large amount of product, the company needed a solid back-up solution in case the machines failed. Its previous hand set-up box was time-consuming to assemble and the design of the box would occasionally result in punctured bags and wasted product. With its high safety standards and production demands, this was not an option, so the company turned to Georgia-Pacific for an innovative solution.


    Solution:
    GP immediately rolled up its sleeves and went to work, employing its team of experts to analyze the customer’s through-put, assembly time, volume per day and stacking requirements. Using this data, GP developed an innovative package design to meet the customer’s specific needs. The new box features a fold-up design with an additional set of flaps. The self-locking die-cut style design is much quicker to assemble manually, enhancing efficiency and productivity for the customer. The box was also strength tested by GP to ensure durability.


    Results:

    The new design has increased productivity, requiring less manual labor to assemble the boxes. Most importantly, by collaborating with GP, the company was able to eliminate puncture wounds to its plastic packaging; reducing waste and helping the family-owned business deliver fresh quality meat to its retail and food service partners.
