    Georgia-Pacific Success Story: Automated Efficiency

How Georgia-Pacific Identified Savings and Sustainability Opportunities for a Major Supplier

    Challenge

A major supplier of fresh sandwich loaves turned to Georgia-Pacific Packaging for help in optimizing its high-volume production line. The company wanted to improve efficiencies and reduce cost while enhancing its environmental impact-profile.

    Solution

Georgia-Pacific Packaging implemented its Packaging Systems Optimization (PSO®) process that helps companies streamline their packaging operations.

The PSO team completed a first-hand assessment at the supplier’s current operation. The team identified several cost saving opportunities, specifically one involving a more efficient package. GP advised the supplier to convert its current regular slotted container (RSC) to wraparound style with an automated “U” pad insert that separates the two- tiered product stack.

This change in design would automate the packing process, allowing for a reduction in both material and labor costs.

    Result

Georgia-Pacific’s PSO assessment increased packing efficiencies for the supplier, while also achieving:

    • $286,000 labor and material savings
    • 29% reduction in packaging material

    Environmental Impact

In addition to a reduction in material and labor savings, the solution also yielded sustainability benefits by significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
